Setting The Mood

Using lighting and shapes to set a mood

Amelie Cross is a an Interior Design student at UAL. This project brief was to use elements such as photography, drawing and text to explore the feeling of escapism

" My intentions for this project were to was to communicate the constraint of working in London and the feeling of wanting to escape. The exploratory shoot I conducted on you was the theme of 'Hiding' - hiding from the reality of working and living in London. The use of dismal lighting is a reflection of the mind and the need to be in a dark, lonesome environment."

For this shoot, Amelie herself was the photographer using her iPhone. Which I think matches well as this was an extremely personal theme that she was expressing. Also showcasing what an iPhone camera can do because the quality was something I wasn't expecting, which I will keep in mind for future photoshoots or perhaps impromptu.

This was shot on a white screen in a photography room at UAL Chelsea. The lighting was created by covering the windows with fabric letting only some light through. She also used a studio light at certain angles which is creating the grid texture on a few of the photos. Switching where it sat to to tease different shadows and somehow producing an earth green aura about the photos.

Before the shoot Amelie had sent me a bit go inspiration she was using. Also whilst were shooting she had created a Pinterest board of poses she wanted me to try, which I found really helpful and made the experience easier knowing what she wanted so that we could get the best results possible. The way whoever is directing the models speaks to them directly impacts the turnout of the photos. We were having conversations on what looks best and laughing when the ideas didn't work out. I understand that at a professional shoot the model doesn't have much say or the majority of times any and that this collaborative feel really came through because we're friends.

Although to reflect on this experience and thinking about how I will conduct shoots for my brand I really want to create an environment where the model feels comfortable to look stupid if they're trying a pose and it doesn't work out and to also communicate if they think there's a good idea. As well as having repartee with whoever is directing them. I will also send them some inspiration and poses prior so that they feel prepared.
